In honor of Asian Heritage Month in Canada, we’re spotlighting five remarkable artists who contribute to the rich tapestry of our music scene in Canada.
While some may have yet to press their melodies onto vinyl, they stand as pillars of creativity and representation. Join us as we champion their stories, emphasizing the urgent need for more inclusive storytelling opportunities within music, especially in underrepresented groups.
Nicolette and The Nobodies
Amid Guelph, Ontario’s quiet charm lies a musical force to be reckoned with: Nicolette & The Nobodies, led by the enigmatic, self taught guitarist, Nicolette Hoang. With an unassuming demeanor and a voice that resonates with raw, vivacious energy, Nicolette defies expectations and blazes her trail in the world of country music. The group well showcases the nuanced artistry of country music, infusing it with vibrant melodies, infectious upbeat rhythms, and heartfelt soulfulness.
Infusing her music with echoes of her Vietnamese roots, Nicolette challenges stereotypes and amplifies underrepresented voices in the industry. With her upcoming album The Long Way, she aims to bridge the gap between her past and present, embracing her identity as a woman of color in a predominantly white, male genre.
As she prepares to embark on the next chapter of her musical journey, Nicolette remains grounded in her roots and steadfast in her commitment to authenticity. With grace and determination, she continues to redefine what it means to be a modern-day Country artist, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. Hua Li 化力
In Montreal’s eclectic music scene, Hua Li stands out as a dynamic force, blending R&B, Hip-Hop, Jazz, and Electronic influences.
Growing up in Victoria, B.C. with a Chinese mother, Hua Li’s music beautifully melds her Eastern upbringing with Western influences. Her songs intricately explore the highs and lows of relationships and cultural identity. Initially discouraged in her family, Rap became her avenue for reconciling cultural differences and sharing not just her narrative but also those of her family members. Her most recent project Dynasty serves as a cohesive storytelling platform, honoring both Hua Li’s unique identity and her familial roots. It presents a diverse range of emotions, from vulnerability to confidence, offering a profound reflection on the multifaceted human experience.
Collaborating with acclaimed producers like Alex Thibault (Gloze) and Lunice of TNGHT, Hua Li creates a sound that is both bold and intimate, weaving together narratives that immerse listeners in a captivating journey, inviting them to explore their own emotions and connections to her music.


Edwin Raphael
Edwin Raphael’s musical journey is a fusion of his diverse cultural background, blending Eastern influences with Western pop sensibilities. Hailing from Dubai with roots in India and now based in Montreal, Raphael’s music resonates with a warmth and depth that reflects his Indian heritage.
Through intricate melodies and soulful storytelling, his music invites listeners on a journey through the landscapes of Kerala and the bustling streets of Montreal. His songs serve as a bridge between worlds, offering a glimpse into the soul of an artist navigating the complexities of heritage and belonging.

Aiko Tomi
Toronto’s indie-pop sensation, Aiko Tomi, is breaking barriers and reshaping the music landscape with her bold and empowering sound. Born in Taipei to a Japanese grandmother and a Chinese grandfather, Tomi draws inspiration from her multicultural heritage to create music that celebrates individuality and challenges societal norms.
With tracks like Monolids and Handful, Tomi addresses themes of identity, body image, and self-acceptance with raw honesty and confidence. Through her music, she empowers listeners to embrace their true selves and defy societal expectations.
As she continues to make waves in the music industry, Tomi remains dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices and inspiring others to embrace their uniqueness. Tara Kannangara
Tara Kannangara, a JUNO-nominated artist of Sri Lankan-Canadian heritage, brings forth music that defies genre boundaries and celebrates cultural fusion. With her signature blend of wild trumpet melodies, searing guitar lines, lush synths, and poignant lyricism, she commands attention and offers a deeply personal musical experience.
Originally from Chilliwack, BC, Tara’s musical journey led her to the University of Toronto, where she studied music. Amidst the backdrop of institutionalized art, she felt compelled to break free and express her truths. Drawing inspiration from her childhood memories and experiences as a woman navigating between cultures, Tara’s music delves into themes of identity, longing, and the complexities of love.
Having collaborated with renowned artists and graced prestigious stages, including NPR’s Tiny Desk with Lido Pimienta and festivals like the Montreal Jazz Festival, Tara’s musical prowess shines through. With each track, she explores the nuances of her multi-racial identity, offering a fresh perspective on themes of belonging and constantly pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a tenacious woman through cultural expression.
